U EVER WONDER....
"WHO
AM I?"
As
we grow up we learn new things about ourselves. However, there are some basic
things that are essential for children to be taught while they are young as they
are developing their ethnic identity. A child does not have any knowledge about
who they are when they arrive in this world. They are probably wondering, "Who
AM I ?" This question is the root of many other ones; Where do I
come from? What is my background? Where do my parents come from? What is my
ethnicity? What does my cultural background consist of? What is my religion?
What is my family customs & belief systems?
I, an immigrant from Iran, at a young age had these questions as I
was raised in America all my life. Growing up I had to research about my
culture and religion due to my dedication of wanting to learn more about WHERE I
COME FROM? What makes me IRANIAN? After battling with my identity for many years
I can now finally say I am a proud.... IRANIAN-American. I include both because
I can not forget my heritage, where I came from, and at the same time I was
raised in America, where a lot of my belief systems were created.
From my experience, I like to contribute something to the Iranian
children raised in a different country of their origin to help them develop a
strong ethnic identity. So I have developed a way that can be fulfilling and fun
for children and not a burden for parents. It also provides parents and
their children to spend quality time together while interacting in a healthy and
joyous way. I am developing a interactive game for Iranian families which
provides an opportunity to educate their children the essentials about their
background, culture, customs & the goal is to build a strong SENSE OF SELF
& ETHNIC IDENTITY. It will be for children ages 5 and up.
Now here's where I can use your HELP. I would appreciate a few
minutes of your time to think of some questions with answers that I can include
in my game. I have developed three categories that I want questions for:
Country, Culture & Customs, & Personal questions. The personal questions
are to make it interesting as well and to help the child and parent get to know
more about their interests, strengths, weaknesses, secrets, likes/dislikes, etc.
This is also to add a little spice and make it more amusing. I'm
sure there are things you learned as an adult that you wish you knew as a child.
Include questions even if you don't know the answers. I really appreciate
your time and support.
